Bed Bug Heat Treatment Prep Sheet

This is the sheet the customers will follow when they schedule a treatment. They will need to complete the steps in the prep sheet before treatment can begin. It needs to say at the top of the page that the prep sheet is designed for extreme infestations and that some items may not need to be completed. It is best to call with any questions.

Preparation for Heat Treatment

1. All people and animals need to be absent from the home during treatment. This includes fish. Dogs and cats should be taken to a groomer to be checked for bed bugs.
2. Secure any valuables, loose papers, pictures, or other items that may be blown around by high wind.
3. All interior areas of the home MUST be treated, unlock any doors, cabinets, or chests in the home.
4. Dispose of any trash or refuse.
5. Do not remove any clothing from the home. All clothing must be treated. The clothing you are wearing shall be removed outside of the home and immediately put in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes. It is best to discard the clothing you wear during treatment and wear new/treated clothing back into the home. Failure to do this may result in re-infestation of the home.
6. Any waterbeds in the home MUST be drained of all water. The water will act as a heat sink and protect the bugs from the heat. Air mattresses should be deflated by up to 50%.
7. DO NOT remove the linens on any mattress. This includes pillowcases, sheets, and blankets.
8. Organize or remove any cluttered areas in the home. Dispose of removed items in the trash. Do not bring them back into the home unless the items have been treated for bed bugs.
9. Remove a portion of clothing from any dressers and hang it in a closet, spaced out evenly and NOT tightly packed.
10. Air conditioning must be turned off for a minimum of 2 hours before treatment is scheduled to start.
11. Power off all electronic devices and unplug them. This includes all appliances.
12. All receptacle covers on outlets and light switches need to be removed.
13. Any smoke, CO2, fire, or thermal detectors/alarms must be deactivated in areas where heat treatment will occur.
14. All sprinklers systems in treated areas must be handled by the owner. Owner must ensure that sprinkler systems do not come on while heat treatment is taking place. We are not responsible for any damage resulting from a sprinkler system activating. Consult a professional if you need help in this area.
15. There needs to be approximately a three-foot by three-foot area in each room, left open, for the equipment to sit.
16. All temperature-sensitive items must be inspected for bed bugs and then removed from the home or placed in the refrigerator.
Any item that is not going to be exposed to heat treatment must be wiped down with 70% isopropanol alcohol before removing it or placing it in storage.
It must be brought to the technician’s attention if any item that is being removed or placed in storage is found to have bed bugs.
The following is a list of potential items that need to be removed or placed in storage.

  1. Candy, chocolate chips, cheese, or any other food items that melts above 100F
  2. Any item that could spoil due to high temperature, like wine or cheese
  3. Soda/alcohol cans and bottles. Any pressurized\carbonated drink
  4. Pressurized cans of any kind. Propane tanks, fire extinguishers, hairspray, cologne, spray paint
  5. Mercury thermometers
  6. Wax, candles, lipstick, makeup, chap stick, deodorant, etc.
  7. Ammunition and any firearms
  8. Any type of musical instrument

  12. Medical devices, including oxygen tanks, and any type of medication\vitamins
  13. All combustible items, including fuel, paint, paint thinners, lighters, zippo fluid, etc.
  14. Any and all items that will be damaged by temperatures above 120-125F

17. The quality of construction from house to house varies considerably. Temperatures are kept below most manufacturers’ recommendations for linoleum flooring/tiles, cabinets, furniture, and most other items. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to check with the manufacturer of these items to determine the best course of action. We are not responsible for any damages resulting from the heat treatment.

Your home will be very warm for a few hours after treatment. You should remain outside of the home until it has cooled and comfortable and is at a safe temperature for you to enter based on your health.
